There are four separate social work licensure exams that The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) offer into order for a social worker to become an official social worker within their educational level. The beginning level exam is the bachelor’s exam. This exam is for individuals who have earned a bachelors degree in social work, and have no other post degree experience, in this case earning a master’s degree. The next level exam is the Master’s exam. This is for individuals who have earned a masters degree in social work, and is designed for those who have not yet been in the social work field for two years. The next level exam is the advanced generalist test. This is a more advanced test for MSW’s who have at least two years of non-clinical therefore administrative experience. The final test that the ASWB offers is the clinical exam. This exam is also a master’s level exam for those who have at least two years experience in a clinical setting.

These social work licensure exams are more difficult than most people realize. The bachelor’s exam only has a pass rate of 79.3%. Put another way, 1 in 5 people who take the test fail. This is after having completed a four-year course of study in social work. The masters and clinical exams have slightly lower pass rates, 74.5% and 74.6% respectively. Here again, the individuals taking the exam have earned a graduate level education in the field, and still have difficulty in passing this test. The advanced generalist exam has the lowest pass rate of 57%.
